The Health Care Complaints Commission of New South Wales (HCCC) plays a vital role in ensuring patient safety. A recent case involving the Fresh Cosmetic Clinic Sydney (the ‘Clinic’) serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with cosmetic procedures being performed by unregistered providers. The HCCC investigation revealed that:
- Botox, hyaluronic acid, dermal filler injections, and other procedures were performed by non-registered individuals.
- Prescription medications were administered by unqualified personnel, with some stock even being expired.
- Registration certificates of registered practitioners not affiliated with the clinic were displayed, potentially misleading patients.
Potential Blood Borne Virus Risk:
Following the HCCC investigation, the South Eastern Sydney Local Health District Public Health Unit inspected the Clinic and identified potential exposure to blood borne viruses like hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and HIV. This risk stemmed from certain procedures performed at the Clinic.
Public Health Warning Issued:
On 31 October 2024, NSW Health issued a Public Health Warning (Link to Public Health Warning) urging patients who underwent procedures for:
- Breast implants
- Facial or nasal line carving
- Any injections at the Clinic
to visit their GPs as soon as possible for blood borne virus testing.
